The Up Tour was a breath of fresh air after the slog of the Monster Tour. Whatever was plaguing the band in 1995 had been solved (at least temporarily) and after a couple of tentative shows to start out the new lineup begins to gel and they got back on track in a big way. I wonder if things hadn't gone so well if they would have called it quits here. They finally show signs of embracing the 'old' material again (kudos to the Scott, Joey & Ken for pushing this) but I have to say I cannot believe Country Feedback was left out so often while Tongue was played every night. MS seemed much more relaxed then in 95 and often commented between songs (and while musicians were changing instruments) with unique and entertaining thoughts that only he could provide, even stepping up for a solo song to kick off the encore every night. Of course, some of the intros were somewhat standard (are you feeling beautiful?, Apologist guy, Great Beyond, bull & bear) and some became so late in the tour (gesture thing). All in all, the three remaining members of R.E.M. had showed everyone (including themselves) that they were still capable of performing at a high level.
