Radio Free Europe / It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
Timeline notes: Final show of the tour, and 'Radio Free Europe' finally makes it tour debut. 'Leave' is again Michael a capella for as much as he can remember of the song.
Notes:
-Ater SFSN MS "Are you feeling great...woods? Well herewe are, it's the last night of our tour and that's that. I tell you actually it's a lttle bit like summer camp you know. We've been travelling around for the better part of 4 months with a group of about, including our crew, including family members & friends well over 50 people and this is the last of it. This is the end. So...it's a little premature for me to say it but I have to admit I'm a little sad. I wish that this could go on and on but that's the way things go you know. One thing ends and another thing starts and it's always good. At any rate, we've had a tremendous, fucking brilliant summer and If we're a little bit melancholy tonight we're going to need you people to have some extra happy energy to float us so we can kick this thing off right". He goes on to request the audience disregard Massachusetts state law and federal law and remove their clothing.
-Before Suspicion MS starts his gesturing story then "I'll finish the story after the song, thank you Peter". After the song "You wanna hear the rest of my story? These guys...bless their hearts they're a little tired of my stories at this point". He gives a standard explination of his gesture from there.
-Before The Apologist MS says hello to the people in the back and asks if they are naked yet, noting that the back is where the fun is really at. Standard intro from there. After the song MS notes his ears are still bothering him from flying.
-Before Great Beyond MS "We wanted to do a shout out to a man that we all love...but he's dead". He goes on to give a standard inro from there but someone seems to have a poster with 7 photos of Andy that MS comments on.
-I could have sworn MS notes Pat McCarthy was there but I got distracted and now can't find that comment.
-Before RFE MS promotes the charity Alternatives for Comminity Environment. "Just because it's the last night of the tour I can say anything I want". He asks for a round of applause for the crew. "They've done a great job, they've kept things from falling on my head. They kept light on you guys when we wanted them to be there and they occasionally take off their clothes when I ask them to in the middle of a show". He introduces Ken then "This is when I start feeling like Carol Burnette in 1977. Don't give me that look...you...[MM] I'm on your side!" He goes on to ridicule the translation of RFE that he found on the internet before the band launches into the song. After the song MS points out a (couple of) young fan "I guarantee you that shirt is older than you are".
-A raucous 10 minute version of ITEOTWAKI serves as catharsis for the tumultuous run since the Monster Tour began. R.E.M. has successfully continued on after losing a founding member. One thing has ended and another has started and it isn't always good, but this, this is good. The band would never entirely shake free from the ghost of Bill Berry but the Up Tour gave them confidence to try for a few more years.
