Saw a lot of great R.E.M. shows over the years but this one always stuck out. Friends had gone to the four previous shows in California at a time when the band's taste for the Golden State was, how shall we say it, yet to be acquired. Those shows were good, but leaving CA for AZ must have had a positive effect, as the show in Tempe was a stunner, boasting some unusual set-list inclusions among them "Boy (Go)," a song Stipe sang on the Golden Palominos album, several terrific covers (see above), a rare-for-this-tour audible of "Radio Free Europe" and the always rare "Underneath the Bunker."

This is a mono recording, done with a single Nak 300 mic. I did circulate this show privately to some R.E.M. collectors several years ago, but it deserves, in my opinion, wider distribution. Hear for yourself in the MP3 sample below.

Notes:
-Shaking Through is aborted and not re-attempted.  Someone in the band apologizes; 'Sorry.  That was my fault.'
-MS chastises the audience for responding when he introduces Orange Crush as a song about Vietnam: 'That was a rhetorical statement.  It does not require a response.'
-MS complains of getting shocked after Orange Crush, then says he is going to write a song about Chile
-MM introduced for Superman
-ITEOTWAWKI BB and PB start without MS and play for almost 20 sec. before he finally starts the vocals
-before Radio Free Europe, MS tells the crowd they have to be completely quiet, then becomes impatient when the band doesnt dive right in to the song.
-Midway through Afterhours, MS stops singing and pleads with the rest to go to a lower key: 'G! G! G! G!', finally they do and he finishes out the song.

first time MS goes super fast on EOTWAWKI (?) regular version 3-1,
possible due to the screw up at the start

Grade: A
