*Luscious Jackson during the opening set with Michael Stipe on lead vocals
Notes:
JEMS master recording. The show captures R.E.M. touring in support of their Monster album and is the final show of the US tour. Luscious Jackson was the opening act. This show features a few unique moments the first being Undertow which was aborted two times before they finally played the full song and Michael Stipe joining Luscious Jackson on stage to sing Evil Woman during their set.
I remember being surprised by the complete lack of security going into MSG for the first time for a concert. When Stipe came out for Evil Woman he had a big frizzy afro wig on a la Jeff Lynne. Most folks appeared to have no idea it was him (he was intro-ed as Lynne)
butterking for JEMS

Notes:
-Running time 2:09:48
-After DTHH, taper notes "His guitar went out". This apparently becomes a big problem during Undertow.
-After You MS "I guess this is the last gig we're going to play in the U.S. for a while because we go across the grea pond to another place".
-During the 1st try at Departure, PB seems to drop out first, then MS calls a halt to the song and seems to take the blame "Sorry, I lost my way. We've been having some technical difficulties in New York City. I think it might be some kind of a magnetic pull somewhere deep inside the Earth. But then again, maybe not". After the second try is aborted, MS mumbles something to which MM adds "I don't think we've played this right since Boston (? on MM's entire statement). MS "You know what I think it is, I'll tell you the truth, I think David Letterman put a curse on me because I knd of snubbed him last night. I didn't mean to, I just didn't want everybody to know how short I am compared to him 'cause he is 6 foot 5 inches tall. I'm 5'9 and a half and I'm really proud of it. [after a few senconds of silence] Does that guitar work Peter? OK. We're going to do this song now that we wrot, where was it? [MM answers] I think is was Salt Lake City. [MS] Salt Lake City? Well we hope you're with us, here we go".
-Semi-rare Near Wild Heaven (2nd to last time performed in 95, Berlin Aug 1 is the last)
-Prior to Tongue MS "This song is my attempt to write kind of a Tori Amos song". More is said that I couldn't quite make out, but the song is dedicated to Lucious Jackson as this is their last night opening.
-PB's Country Feedback solo 1:18
-Astute commentary from the taper & friend after Star 69
-After Everybody Hurts, MM wishes his mom a happy birthday
Grade: A
-Where would R.E.M. fans be without JEMS?
