R.E.M.'s second full length album was released in early April and after some obligatory promo work the Little America tour had kicked off in June almost exactly one month prior to this show. July 12, 1984 found R.E.M. in Canada for a quick two night stand hitting Montreal on the 12th and Toronto on the 13th. Early on someone near the taper notes "Wow it's pretty full" and the songs, both old and new are well received. On this night, seven songs come from the newly released Reckoning, with two from what would become Fables Of The Reconstruction, released the following year. This was R.E.M.'s second time playing this room, the first being 1983-04-17. After 7 Chinese Bros Stipe comments "We were here once before, there were no stars on the roof".
The highlight of this show is that it exists at all. Until a few days ago it was unknown to us at what I'll call 'The R.E.M. Collective' There's a lot of knowledge there and we had never even seen this show on a list before. Presented here is a 35+ year old recording that has been kept under wraps until this very moment. Doesn't get much better than that you say? Actually it does because it's a very good recording. Speed is spot on, there's nice dynamics between bandmembers, crowd isn't too much and it's 1st gen. It's not often a mid-I.R.S era R.E.M. show surfaces these days, so it's a great day to be an R.E.M. fan! Many, many thanks to stevemtl for getting this out. Lastly, if you have some R.E.M. tapes you think might be un- or under-circulated please drop us a line. We're not getting any new albums from this band so things like this are what we have to look forward to now http://remtimeline.com/listentome/
